Let's talk about why the language we have continued to use to describe our hair is creating a new generation of natural afro hair damage.

"The Problem Isn’t the Hair — It’s the Vocabulary!"
Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard a child’s beautiful curls called "nappy", "frizzy", or "a bush" and cringed inside. Yep.🙋🏽♀️
We don’t talk enough about how early kids learn that their hair isn’t “neat” unless it’s slicked, stretched, or sizzling under a blow dryer. The message is loud and clear: straight = tidy, curly = chaotic. And curl-friend, that messaging is not just outdated, it's harmful.
Let’s break it down. Frizz? It’s not a hair crime. It’s often just a cry for moisture. Bushy? That’s volume, baby. And "nappy"? Let’s just agree that word belongs in the bin unless you're changing a baby.
When we use these terms without thinking, we plant seeds of shame. We tell our children their hair needs to be fixed, managed, hidden. And that sticks.
Across many African countries, children are still required to wear their hair in tight, painful styles to look "presentable". Blow dryers and straighteners on 4-year-olds? That’s not grooming, that’s generational trauma with heat damage.
Frizz isn't failure. It’s usually a sign your curls are thirsty or misunderstood. With the right hydration, tools, and techniques, curls thrive. They don’t need fixing, just loving.
Stats to chew on: According to the World Afro Day Hair Equality Report (2019), 1 in 6 Black children have had negative experiences with school hair policies in the UK. The message: it’s not your hair, it’s their prejudice.
Sassy truth bomb: Your hair isn’t misbehaving. It’s just reacting to a world that doesn’t know how to treat it right.
Let’s shift this: Start praising fullness, shine, bounce. Show your little ones how to love their curl pattern like a signature. Remember, if you need help understanding yours or your little ones hair, I got you. Get in touch and lets find your curl happy place
